Smart Start:
-administers funds from the state legislature to support programs that benefit children birth to age five and their families.
-are a catalyst for bringing different groups together for the sake of the children.
-educates the community on the critical needs of young children and helps develop solutions.
-is a community resource for families and non profit groups that serve young children.
Programs:
-Child Care Subsidy assists parents on a fixed income with the costs of child care. For assistance, parents must apply in person at the Yadkin County Human Services Agency (336.849.7910) This program includes wrap-around care.
-Preschool Subsidy helps income eligible children attend preschool through Yadkin County Schools. For additional information, parents may contact Kristy Groce at the Yadkin County Board of Education (336-679-2051).
-Dolly Parton's Imagination Library gives children the gift of reading. Every month, until their fifth birthday, Yadkin County children are eligible to receive a FREE developmentally appropriate book shipped to their home address.
-The Early Childhood Resource Center (ECRC) provides information to parents about community resources, including the NC Pre-Kindergarten program and choosing quality care. Parents and child care providers are able to check out items from our extensive lending library, which includes books, toys, and theme packets, and use our resource room, which includes die cuts, a copier, and a laminator. Technical assistance and monthly workshops are also available to providers on various topics, including CPR and First Aid.
-Motheread/Fatheread teaches adults literacy skills in a child and family development context. Parents will improve their own reading skills, learn how to help their children become better readers and thinkers, and develop better family communication skills. The target population will be parents of young children ages birth - 5.
